Conservation and Restoration of Frescos • Portel / Portugal

The Conservation and Restoration of Frescos training course was organised by European Heritage Volunteers in collaboration with Associação Mundo Património in cooperation with Spira - Revitalização patrimonial and the municipality of Portel , Alentejo Region, Portugal. The project focused on the Capela de São Brás, a chapel adorned with significant frescoes that had deteriorated over time due to environmental factors and previous restoration attempts. Participants engaged in hands-on conservation and restoration of the chapel's frescoes, gaining practical experience in delicate interventions on historical surfaces. The work included examining and securing the top of the walls, renewing joints, performing colour retouching, and strengthening heavily weathered stone surfaces. All conservation and restoration steps were documented to produce a comprehensive report of the interventions carried out. The educational programme provided participants with insights into the complete conservation process, including the utilisation of different materials and techniques for fresco restoration. Theoretical discussions covered the history and significance of the Capela de São Brás, the fading technique of fresco painting, and the challenges associated with preserving such artworks. This combination of practical work and theoretical learning ensured that participants not only contributed to the site's preservation but also deepened their understanding of heritage conservation practices.
